The Loisaida Listen, Episode #3

Posted by Loisaida Sam On April - 9 - 2010

Wow, has it really been a month? Sorry doesn’t even really cut it, I’ve been slacking. Let me try and recap what I’ve been up to…

Let’s see, in shows news, I ended up missing the Woods/Real Estate show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday 12 March. I wish I could have made it, as I heard it was excellent. The following Monday 15 March, the BPS staff all attended Hockey at Bowery Ballroom, which was GREAT! Tons of energy, and an excellent live show. Some time went by, I went to Vegas for CTIA, got sick when I came back, and finally recovered in time for jj and the xx at Webster Hall on 31 March. Before I talk about the xx, I should tell you that I went into the show actually more excited to see jj than the xx, and was sorely disappointed by them. I wish I’d read reviews of jj from SXSW, but kinda ignored them, and with jj’s jj nº3 in constant rotation around the apartment, I really had my hopes up. Talk about lack of stage presence. The singer (whose name I actually don’t even care to look up at this point) came on with an acoustic guitar and sang the first tune off the new album, which was actually pretty good, but following that, she made her way through a set of jj tunes with complete indifference. It was basically just boring karaoke – the dude would play the instrumental track on his laptop from the side of the stage, and the girl would sing along to it, totally uninspired. At one point the dude came on to join with a guitar for part of a song, but then left. Boring. I still rock the album, but would avoid seeing them in concert. Trust me. Now onto the xx – EXCELLENT performance! I personally think that Webster Hall was a bit of a big venue to suit their size sound (many others disagree with me), and they came off a bit timid, but definitely put on an amazing show. I wish I caught them at Mercury Lounge during CMJ, as I bet that was a better fit, but se la vie. The xx played through their (one album plus a cover) catalog very well, and definitely made for a great show. The most recent show I saw was Suckers at Brooklyn Bowl this past Tuesday 6 April, and man I can not get enough of these guys lately. I don’t know if I’ll be able to wait until June 8th for their first full length album “Wild Smile” to drop. Out of Brooklyn, these guys recently signed to my favorite record label (Frenchkiss), and dropped the new album’s first single “Black Sheep” to the masses (which is amazing). Their show was super energetic and enthusiastic – definitely keep an eye on these guys – they’ll be touring with Local Natives (also of recent Frenchkiss stardom).

And now, onto the Loisaida Playlist for 9 April 2010:

MGMT – Congratulations

There was a ton of hype behind MGMT’s new album – they had some secret contests, involving things like driving around in a van in Brooklyn listening to the new album, or their secret show at The Mercury Lounge under the moniker The Smirking Worm. After the album unofficially leaked, they figured they’d just leak the official version at their site (which I think they’ve since taken down). I’m really digging this album a lot. The single “Flash Delirium” didn’t get me at first, but I like it now. The last two tracks in particular are my favorite.

Brad Mehldau – Highway Rider

Something new (and a lot of it!) from Brad Mehldau. This album has received rave reviews from all over, and lives up to it’s hype. I (maybe selfishly) wished for more dope covers, but his original work is definitely excellent too. Check it out.

Wait What – The Notorious XX

I’ve been listening to this one a bunch. Sometimes mashups like this can be kind of lame, and I’m not sold on the entire album, but the first couple of tracks are bangers. Unfortunately they had to take the download link down due to copyright issues, but I’m sure if you Google around you can find it. If not, hit us up and we’ll be glad to send it your way.

Suckers – Wild Smile (out 8 June) – “Black Sheep”

That band of the moment! Watch these guys!!!

Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record – All To All & Forced To Love

BSS released a couple of new singles to follow up “World Sick”. They are available to purchase on Arts & Crafts’ website, and I’m definitely looking forward to May 4th when the album finally drops. It seems like forever away from now, but with a little luck we’ll get there before the world ends (I’m also super stoked to be among the privileged few who will be in attendance at the super sold out Webster Hall show, along with The Incident and Yukon Fox).

She & Him – Volume Two

The second offering from M Ward and Zooey Deschanel is excellent. I feel like “Thieves” is definitely the standout track, and maybe I’m just saying that because they released it first and I’ve heard it so many times that it makes such an impression compared to the rest of the album. I’ll keep you posted…

Hot Chip – One Life Stand

If you don’t have this album, get it now! Unbelieveable! Currently in constant rotation around Loisaida, this album will get your body moving. More recently, a remix featuring Bonnie “Prince” Billy has surfaced, which has been my go-to.

More recently:

I just picked up Dr. Dog – Shame Shame as well as Dum Dum Girls – I Will Be, and will be sure to let you know what I think as soon as I’ve wrapped my head around them. The amount of buzz around Dr. Dog at the moment is incredible – I’m hoping it lives up to the hype. Other recent recommendations are David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s offering Here Lies Love, Sigur Ros’ lead singer Jonsi’s first solo album Go, and Laura Marling’s I Speak Because I Can.

Shows ticker:

Well, let’s see… I missed Atoms For Peace on Monday and Tuesday – I’m trying to pull myself away from bigger name shows more and more (due to all of my money going there plus feeling less in touch with the music), but after reading reviews I really wish I saw at least one of Thom Yorke’s two NYC gigs. In particular, I would have loved to have seen him play his cover of Miracle Legion’s “All For The Best” solo on Tuesday night. I also missed last night’s LCD Soundsystem show at Music Hall of Williamsburg which I truly regret, and was unable to procure tix for Webster Hall on Monday, gugh. Additionally, I’ll be in LA next week, which leads me to miss the Crystal Castles show at Irving on Wednesday, gugh… Something I’m meaning to make my way to is ?uestlove’s DJ residency at Brooklyn Bowl on all of the Thursdays in April. When I get back from LA, I’m going to see Elvis Costello as he graces The United Palace Theater on 23 April.

Well, it’s been enjoyable. Now I gotta get back to work! Hopefully see you soon!

March Mix

Posted by DJ Gay Boy On March - 11 - 2010

Spring has sprung in New York City. And I’m on Spring Break. I decided to kick off the vacation by putting some recent tracks and old favorites in a new Bulletproof Sombreros exclusive mix. A bunch of new releases from DFA Records show their faces here, including a little Friendly Fires/Holy Ghost! tag team action where they cover each others tunes. The Lisztomania remix makes another appearance in one of my mixes, it’s just too good. This is shorter and more to the point than February’s mix. Enjoy an hours worth of where my head is at today. (The photo above is the cover art of Air France’s “No Way Down” EP. The first track of this mix is also from this EP, and it is an incredible piece of music, and perfect for the coming good weather.)

The Loisaida Listen, Episode #2

Posted by Loisaida Sam On March - 11 - 2010
Here it is, the second installment of The Loisaida Listen! First off, my apologies for being away for so long. I meant to make this a weekly article, written on Wednesday or Thursday (some day after Tuesday’s new album releases so I can discuss the latest in new music), but ended up going snowboarding in Vermont, celebrating birthdays, and generally going to too many shows since my last post. I can’t tell you it won’t happen again, but I’ll try harder to prevent it.
Now, onto the music! I want to break this post up into two sections: 1. what I’ve been listening to for the past couple of weeks, and 2. what is new this week.
In the last few weeks, I got into Gil Scott-Heron’s new album I’m New Here (yes, the very same Gil Scott-Heron who wrote The Revolution Will Not Be Televised!), and I’ve got to say – the now 60-year-old Gil Scott-Heron’s still got it. His vocals are impeccable and his message draws you in. I’m not of the generation that would be too familiar with him, but what he has to say definitely translates. Aside from that album, there wasn’t too much new in the last few weeks that I was interested in, so I dug back into 2009 for something I’d missed, and came up with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ album, which I’m really digging. That track “Home” in particular is how I got introduced to the album, and it still sounds as great as it did from play one.
There is a ton of new music this week. Let’s start off with the long-anticipated Broken Bells debut album by the same name. James Mercer (from the Shins) and Danger Mouse (from Gnarls Barkley and The Grey Album fame) have teamed up to put together an incredible record – definitely pick this one up. Standout tracks for me are “The High Road” and “The Mall & Misery”. The next new album I want to recommend is jj nº 3 from Swedish act jj. This, the band’s second full length album, struck me from the get-go. I literally picked it up yesterday and have already listened to it cover to cover three times. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them open up for The XX at the end of this month. Pretty Lights put out a new album this week as well (for free!). I haven’t dug into it too deep yet, but am enjoying it so far. Also, Neon Indian teamed up with Mountain Dew’s “Green Label Sound” to cook up the new track “Sleep Paralysist” which is definitely worth checking out. Other music that I haven’t had time to check out yet, but would definitely bet on, includes Ellie Goulding – Lights (which has received rave reviews in the UK), Gorillaz – Plastic Beach (probably the most talked-about album out this week), We Were Promised Jetpacks – The Last Place You’ll Look, and Liars long-awaited release Sisterworld.
In other music news, I want to highlight this band called Suckers (MySpace | Lala | Daytrotter). I was too tired to make it to their show last night, but Yukon Fox checked them out at Le Poisson Rouge and had great things to say. Recently signed to my favorite record label of the moment, Frenchkiss, this band is lighting up music blogs everywhere, the most recent news being their first full length album Wild Smile dropping on June 8th. Keep an eye out for these guys!

Shows ticker:

Jukebox The Ghost put on a sick show last Thursday at the Bowery Ballroom. Fresh from their European tour, Ben Tommy and Jesse debuted some new material, as well as dipped into some older favorites, and really got the crowd going. In the last few years this band has really come into their own – I’m definitely looking forward to their new record. Neon Indian and Holy Ghost were at Webster Hall on Friday night, but I missed it in favor of some birthday celebrating. RJD2 and Break Science absolutely blew my mind at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night – I had some doubts going into this show from some naysayers, but RJD2 impressed me just as much as the last time I saw him at The Black Cat in DC probably 5 years ago. One man, three turntables, no headphones, beat machines, just running shit. Tuesday I saw Soulive playing with Charlie Hunter at Brooklyn Bowl doing Beatles covers (they called it Rubber Soulive – clever!), which was absolutely bonkers. I walked in to hear the familiar voice of none other than Nigel Hall serenading the entire alley. Later during Soulive’s set, I particularly enjoyed when the Shady Horns came out on stage, including the likes of Ryan Zoidis (of Rustic Overtones stardom). Suckers played last night at Le Poisson Rouge, which I noted earlier. As far as the rest of this week goes, I’m looking forward to Woods/Real Estate at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night. Additionally, we over here at BPS are also really looking forward to Hockey this coming Monday at Bowery Ballroom.

See ya’ll in the next episode!

Lindstrom/Prins Thomas BBC Essential Mix

Posted by DJ Gay Boy On February - 23 - 2010

It’s cold in Norway. It’s cold. The nights are long. Really long. There’s lots of snow. There’s not much better to do than dance away those long, cold, snow-filled nights with all the beautiful blond Norwegian women. Enter Hans Peter Lindstrom and Prins Thomas. Heads of the Feedelity and Full Pup Record labels, respectively, Lindstrom and Prins are responsible for the sounds that have affectionately been dubbed “space-disco.” Here we have a 2007 mix recorded for Pete Tong’s legendary BBC Essential Mix series. In the thickest possible British accent, “This one is exceptional!”

DJ Gay Boy on the Ones and Twos…

Posted by DJ Gay Boy On February - 20 - 2010

Comin at you live from Grammerskizzle East Vizzle New York Cizzle. And a shout out to the Loisaidas.

Here’s the latest mix-tape from DJ Gay Boy himself (Disclaimer: DJ Gay Boy is neither Gay, nor a Boy, and barely even qualifies as a DJ). This post is self-indulgent, but I intend to use Bulletproof Sombreros as a forum to show you all banging fire disco tracks. But this week it’s my mix.

This one brings you 100 minutes of Indie Disco Funk Fire, with some 80s New Wave thrown in for good measure. Two tracks (the first track will read funny in I-tunes, but don’t worry, it’s not 8 hours long).

Exquisitely mixed, expertly curated, from DJ Gay Boy’s heart to your soundsystem.

The Loisaida Listen, Episode #1

Posted by Loisaida Sam On February - 18 - 2010

What’s up hermanitos? Loisaida Sam here, dropping my inaugural post on this latest iteration of Bulletproof Sombreros.

In our brainstorming sessions, one idea I came up with is a weekly music column entitled “The Loisaida Listen” where we here at Bulletproof Sombreros keep the world posted on the latest and greatest in music that we deem worthy. We will update you with weekly album releases, keep you posted on our favorite music of the past, as well as what we’re looking forward to on the horizon. With the Loisaida playlist in your tape deck, you can’t go wrong!

In this week’s Loisaida Listen, I want to focus on a band called Local Natives. I had heard some buzz around their name, but first became aware of them during CMJ of 2009 where they followed an energetic performance by Hockey at Mercury Lounge. I regret not sticking around for more than a couple of songs (one of many late nights during CMJ where I was just plain worn out / being soft), but really enjoyed what I did hear. They are an LA band whose debut album Gorilla Manor was released in the UK in 2009. The reason I am mentioning them now is that after signing to one of my favorite labels Frenchkiss Records (also boasting the likes of The Antlers, Passion Pit, etc.), Gorilla Manor was finally just released in the US this past Tuesday! Yahoo! Now we can all go pick up the vinyl!

In NYC? Look for Local Natives at The Bowery Ballroom on May 6th (tickets on sale tomorrow at noon!)
